Tetu, the Signature Cake of Pemukul

TIMESINDONESIA, PALU – During the holy month of Ramadhan, Tetu  is always available for purchase in Palu, Central Sulawesi. In fact, this Palu signature cake is the most bestselling item in Palu.

Most people in Pemukul name this cake as ‘kue perahu’ (boat cake), as the wrapping of the cake is made of pandan leaf which is then shaped like a boat. The price is relatively affordable, only IDR 5, 000 per pack containing 3 – 4 pieces of cake.


  “This cake becomes the most favorite item during Ramadhan in Pemukul, that’s why I always sell it during Ramadhan, ” said Wulan, one of the sellers in Palu.

Tetu is the most bestselling cake in her shop. This cake tastes sweet and you can modify its flavor according to your preference.

  “You can just mix the desired flavor in the cake mixture. You can use two types of sugar, white sugar or brown sugar. However, most People here like brown sugar, ” she explained.

There is no specific information about its origin, gandar this traditional cake can be found in Mamuju, West Sulawesi; Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, and some other regions in Sulawesi.

This cake is easy to make. It is made of two different mixtures for the cake and the topping.

The cake mixture is made of wheat flour and coconut milk, while the topping is made of flour, salt, and coconut milk. Stir the mixture until it is smooth.

Heat the steamer. Arrange the pandan wrappings on the steamer tray. Add a tablespoon of white sugar or brown sugar inside the pandan wrapping, then pour the cake mixture.

Steam for 3 to 5 minutes. Add some 1 – 2 tablespoon of the topping mixture onto the cake. Then, steam for 2 to 3 more minutes. It is very easy to make Tetu, isn’t it? Give it a try! (*)
